Artist-run spaces and artist-run initiatives are names for organisations established by artists for the production and presentation of new art. They operate as sites of self-determination where artists create professional opportunities for themselves and their peers.

The type of activities taking place at artist-run organisations include exhibitions, publications, performances, forums, talks and social events. This all happens within an atmosphere of exchange, collaboration, participation and action.

The Victorian Initiatives of Artists network (VIA-n) was established in 2004 to support, promote and recognise the activities of the many different artist-run initiatives operating in Victoria. It also plans to advocate on behalf of these organisations.

VIA-n is supported by the organisations in the network, and relies on the voluntary labour of individuals from these organisations as well as other artists.
